{"id":1178,"date":"2018-06-22T10:06:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T17:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1178"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:35:17","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:35:17","slug":"in-a-fight-for-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2018\/06\/22\/in-a-fight-for-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"In a fight for lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week I read a story in the News Tribune about a teenager who broke into a woman&#8217;s home in the early hours of Saturday morning.\u00a0 Her husband was gone on travel, so she was home alone when awakened by her dogs to alert her to a 16-year-old breaking into the house.\u00a0 The woman grabbed her handgun and shouted a warning down the hallway.\u00a0 The teen burglar\u00a0ignored that warning and came down the hall toward her. That\u2019s when she fired a warning shot.<\/p>\n<p>I have never had a warning shot fired in my vicinity in a darkened hallway, but it has to be terrifying.\u00a0 Any remotely rational person would immediately flee to avoid getting shot. But, not this teenage burglar. I was stunned to learn that the first shot didn\u2019t deter him \u2013 he kept coming. So, left with no options, the homeowner shot the suspect in the arm and held him at gunpoint until our deputies arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly, the injured teen laid on the floor and kept yelling, \u201cI\u2019m so high!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about how powerful the drugs he was on must have been to completely override his fight or flight instinct.\u00a0 It gave me further insight into the opioid epidemic and the scourge of drug abuse on our community.\u00a0 How can we possibly combat something this powerful?\u00a0 While there is no single solution, I do see many people and organizations stepping up to take action.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, I helped celebrate the opening of a new drug takeback kiosk at the Walgreens on 6<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue.\u00a0 I was pleased to see this partnership between Walgreens and Regence making it more convenient for people to dispose of unwanted medications.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1184\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-kiosk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-kiosk.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-kiosk-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-kiosk-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-kiosk-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the event there was the typical amount of speeches and well-wishing on the agenda. Photos were taken and handshakes were shared.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1183\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-takeback.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-takeback.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-takeback-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-takeback-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/06\/Drug-takeback-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But, then something incredible happened.\u00a0 An older gentleman came forward with a brown bag full of unused prescriptions from his late wife.\u00a0 He had heard about the new kiosk and he wanted to make sure the leftover drugs were not accessible to his great-grandsons, who he occasionally watches.\u00a0 He wanted to prevent an accidental poisoning, but he was also keeping these drugs from a potential abuser as well.<\/p>\n<p>We have several other initiatives underway to provide behavioral healthcare to those who so desperately need it \u2013 our neighbors, co-workers, friends and family members. This horrible epidemic spares no one in its path.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our Council just passed an ordinance to preclude\u00a0supervised drug consumption sites in unincorporated Pierce County.<\/li>\n<li>The new 120-bed behavioral health hospital run by CHI Franciscan and Multicare will open in January. I\u2019m grateful the Council appropriated the money\u00a0to help fund its construction.<\/li>\n<li>The Opioid Task Force led by Councilmember Derek Young and Tacoma City Councilman Conor McCarthy\u00a0is looking at best practices and potential policy changes.<\/li>\n<li>The Prosecutor\u2019s Office is taking on big pharma with litigation aimed at choking off the supply of prescription drugs flooding our community.<\/li>\n<li>The Therapeutic Courts led by Judge Martin and Judge Cuthbertson allow individuals to get the care and treatment, and do the hard work, that earns them the opportunity to move forward.<\/li>\n<li>And drug take-back sites were started nearly a decade ago in Fife thanks, to the efforts of then City Councilman Glenn Hull.\u00a0 The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department recently expanded these efforts as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will take many efforts on a variety of fronts to get the upper hand on this battle and I\u2019m confident we will get there. We must.
