{"id":1313,"date":"2018-09-14T09:58:26","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T16:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1313"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:35:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:35:13","slug":"the-long-road-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2018\/09\/14\/the-long-road-home\/","title":{"rendered":"The long road home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past Monday, I finished an excellent book \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B078MFB5BH\/ref=oh_aui_d_detailpage_o01_?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1\">\u201cIndianapolis: the True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the 50 Year Fight to Exonerate and Innocent Man<\/a>\u201d by Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1314 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Indianapolis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Indianapolis.jpg 675w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Indianapolis-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of you may only know of the USS Indianapolis from the memorable scene in the movie \u201cJaws,\u201d with the character Quint (played by Robert Shaw)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_41372\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SEx2nU74_Wo?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=SEx2nU74_Wo&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>The story starts much earlier.\u00a0 The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a cruiser that served exceptionally well in the Pacific during World War II.\u00a0 She fought in most of the major battles and served as the flagship for the Fifth Fleet.\u00a0 She was struck by a kamikaze off Okinawa, returned to California for repairs, and then transported the core of the atomic bombs to the island of Tinian.<\/p>\n<p>Several days before the end of the war, she was torpedoed while transiting alone between Guam and the Philippines Islands.\u00a0 Nearly 300 of her 1,200-man crew died in the attack and she sunk in under 15 minutes.\u00a0 900 men abandoned ship, but when the rescue came five days later, only 316 survived.\u00a0 Those five days were horrific on many levels.\u00a0 Many of those who were rescued never really recovered, struggling with alcohol and drugs.\u00a0 The Commanding Officer, Captain Charles B. McVay III, committed suicide in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, I commemorated September 11, 2001 at a service hosted by Lieutenant General Gary Volesky, the Commander of I Corps at JBLM (BTW &#8211; he is a Central Washington University graduate).<\/p>\n<p>General Volesky reminded us about the many heroes of that day \u2013 in Manhattan, at the Pentagon, and in a field in Pennsylvania.\u00a0 He also recalled that units from JBLM were some of the first to respond to the attacks.\u00a0 The 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion, 75<sup>th<\/sup> Ranger Regiment \u201cled the way,\u201d followed shortly by the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Special Forces Group.\u00a0 17 years later, I Corps still have more than 4,000 soldiers deployed overseas in the Global War on Terror.<\/p>\n<p>The general knows a lot about combat and its costs.\u00a0 In 2004, then Lieutenant Colonel Volesky, was leading a battalion in Iraq when the war took a dramatic escalation on \u201cBlack Sunday.\u201d One of his platoons was ambushed while out in the city.\u00a0 Over the next 48 hours of intense combat, it took everything he had to locate and rescue his platoon.\u00a0 This story is told powerfully in the National Geographic miniseries called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/tv\/the-long-road-home\/\">The Long Road Home<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poignantly, the \u201clong road home\u201d applies to both the platoon getting back to the safety of their base, and the impact of wounds &#8211; both physical and mental &#8211; on many of the soldiers who fought.\u00a0 The long road home continues long after the echo of the final bullet fades.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the 17th anniversary of 9\/11, this week is\u00a0 also National Suicide Prevention Week.\u00a0\u00a0And,\u00a0 clearly, we\u00a0must find a better way to help our neighbors\u00a0in Pierce County.\u00a0 Three people commit suicide every day in Washington State \u2013 one every eight hours.\u00a0 Washington\u2019s suicide rate of 15 per 100,000 people is higher than the national rate of 13.\u00a0 Pierce County&#8217;s rate nearly doubled from 12 per 100,000 population in 2007 to 20 in 2016.
