And voter registration is in the air!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no accident that National Voter Registration Day was September 26th, 2018, as we prepare for the November General Election.<\/p>\n<p>The Auditor\u2019s Office had a blast at Rock the Vote at PLU and at civic events across Pierce County.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1356\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Elections-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Elections-1.jpg 850w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Elections-1-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2018\/09\/Elections-1-768x334.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Washington State\u2019s voter registration rate is quite healthy, regularly in the top quartile of the nation. \u00a0We\u2019ve registered roughly <u>83<\/u>% of the eligible population! That leaves just 17% eligible adults to register. The low hanging fruit has been harvested.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to need a ladder to reach the rest!<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the 2018 Washington State legislature passed several registration laws that will take effect in 2019. Your Pierce County Elections Division is busily getting ready for implementation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Automatic Registration<\/li>\n<li>16 and 17-Year Old Preregistration<\/li>\n<li>Same Day Registration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Automatic registration<\/strong> refers to the enrollment of people who aren\u2019t on the voter rolls but have obtained:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An enhanced driver\u2019s license or commercial driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n<li>Social services that verify citizenship.<\/li>\n<li>Health insurance through the state health exchange.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These transactions require proof of citizenship and Washington State residence, key requirements. So, upon enrollment, the Secretary of State\u2019s Office will send opt-out notifications to prospective registrants and allow 60-days to opt-out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixteen and 17-year old preregistration<\/strong> is an expansion of Motor Voter.\u00a0 When teens apply for their driver\u2019s license or ID card, they\u2019ll be asked if they\u2019d like to be registered to vote.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teens would not be sent ballots or allowed to vote until they are 18-years old.<\/li>\n<li>Pre-registration information would be exempt from public disclosure requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Same-day registration<\/strong> does exactly what it says.\u00a0 Eligible unregistered citizens can visit the Auditor\u2019s Office on Election Day, register to vote, and then cast a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired about your own election participation?
