October is my favorite month of the year \u2013 and today is a great reason why.\u00a0 It is a spectacularly beautiful day in Pierce County!\u00a0 High School football teams will be under the lights tonight and the Huskies will defeat the Ducks tomorrow!\u00a0 Many of our employees will be heading to the mountains, fields and marshes to recreate \u2013 and some will be mowing their lawns, hoping it is the last one of the year.\u00a0 Sunday afternoon I plan to visit Spooner Farms with my granddaughters.\u00a0 October is the best!<\/p>\n

Even as I revel in October, I am also keenly aware what lies ahead.\u00a0 \u201cWinter is coming\u201d and with it comes challenges for some of our residents and our community.\u00a0 We have work to do.<\/p>\n

Sadly, many in our community are struggling to hang on to their housing in the face of increasing housing costs.\u00a0 For far too many of residents, housing has become unaffordable. \u00a0That is why I was pleased to co-host a regional meeting of local elected officials committed to addressing this growing problem.<\/p>\n

With my partners, Mayor Victoria Woodards and Councilmember Connie Ladenburg, we convened the first Mayor\u2019s Roundtable on Affordable Housing. As the mayor aptly said, \u201cOur cities are in the midst of a housing affordability crisis, and it is our obligation to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While each city may have its own specific challenge or concern to address, we acknowledged we share many of the same issues.\u00a0 One of those is the acute and growing need for senior housing. As we\u2019ve also experienced with the MCIRT program, our oldest neighbors are in the most precarious situation with their financial security and health.<\/p>\n

As we work to craft policies and initiatives to create more affordable housing, we look forward to inviting more partners to join us. Government alone will not solve this, and private companies can\u2019t do it all on their own. \u00a0It will take integrated, comprehensive market-based solutions to make sustainable, lasting progress. \u00a0Working together and thinking creatively will be key to our success.<\/p>\n

In that vein, I am very thankful for the leadership and creativity shown by Michael Mirra at the Tacoma Housing Authority and Mary Chikwinya of Tacoma Community College for working with developer, Chad Duncan.\u00a0 Together, they found a way to renovate the former Tiki Apartments and still keep them affordable.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a link to the News Tribune column<\/a> by Matt Driscoll. Great work!<\/p>\n

Speaking of coffee, I had the chance to work \u201cbehind the bar\u201d at the Starbucks off I-5 and SR 512.\u00a0 I came away with a new appreciation for baristas and the work they do!\u00a0 Who knew you could order an Iced Venti Latte with FIVE shots?<\/p>\n

I also appreciated the tremendous teamwork that goes on \u201cbehind the bar.\u201d\u00a0 Finally, I was proud that this particular Starbucks, just outside of JBLM, was the first store to partner with military members and their families.\u00a0 Serving those who serve!<\/p>\n
