{"id":1541,"date":"2019-01-18T08:40:19","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T16:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1541"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:35:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:35:07","slug":"a-powerful-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2019\/01\/18\/a-powerful-lesson\/","title":{"rendered":"A powerful lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What if I told you students in Puyallup can graduate with an RN degree by age 20?!\u00a0 It\u2019s true!<\/p>\n<p>The Puyallup School District has teamed up with Clover Park Technical College to offer a nursing program that begins in high school and finishes in college with a nursing degree.<\/p>\n<p>High school students can choose to take the Nursing Assistant Certification, or NAC, class at Emerald Ridge, Puyallup or Rogers high schools.\u00a0 The classes are offered at their school and their hands-on practical work is done at the Puyallup Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.<\/p>\n<p>From high school, students can transfer to Clover Park and complete the curriculum and training needed to swiftly enter the RN degree program and finish the final two years before they can legally drink alcohol or rent a car!<\/p>\n<p>Wow!\u00a0 In an environment where we can\u2019t hire nurses fast enough, this innovative program makes it convenient and less expensive for students, provides an educated stream of new nurses for MultiCare\u2019s Good Samaritan Hospital serving East Pierce County (little known fact \u2013 Good Sam has the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> busiest emergency room in the State \u2013 second only to Harborview!), and a team of extra hands and hearts for the rehab center.\u00a0 That\u2019s a win-win-win for everyone!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fantastic example of what can be accomplished when we create powerful partnerships with smart collaborators.<\/p>\n<p>But, I\u2019ll let the students chime in here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cI plan on going into the medical field, so being able to have this hands-on experience gives me the opportunity to explore my options and abilities.\u201d\u00a0 Allisyn Dahl<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThe NAC class at Rogers is giving me a baseline understanding of the medical field.\u00a0 The things I am learning will stay with me throughout my career.\u201d\u00a0 Emilie Svensson<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cI feel like the NAC program gave me a head start and a foot in the door for a career in Nursing.\u00a0 Some people don\u2019t have the money to pay for college classes and this program at the high school helps so much.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Faith Clarke<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1543\" style=\"width: 5673px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1543 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Puyallup-High-NAC-class-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5673\" height=\"3787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Puyallup-High-NAC-class-1.jpg 5673w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Puyallup-High-NAC-class-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Puyallup-High-NAC-class-1-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Puyallup-High-NAC-class-1-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 5673px) 100vw, 5673px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alzay Nelson and Gabriella Orona from Puyallup High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1544\" style=\"width: 6016px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Rogers-NAC-class-1-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4016\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Rogers-NAC-class-1-002.jpg 6016w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Rogers-NAC-class-1-002-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Rogers-NAC-class-1-002-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/01\/Rogers-NAC-class-1-002-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 6016px) 100vw, 6016px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drake Lufkin and Allisyn Dahl from Rogers High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Maija Thiel, the director of Instructional Leadership at Puyallup School District, \u201cIt\u2019s really about preparing students for careers, ultimately. And when we say careers, it\u2019s not just a job. It\u2019s making a living wage and also having opportunities for advancement, whether college, military or the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 35 students enrolled in the NAC program, which is one of many Career and Technical Education (or CTE) classes offered in Puyallup schools.<\/p>\n<p>When you consider that at only 37% Pierce County lags far behind King, Thurston, Snohomish and Kitsap counties in the completion of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.piercecountywa.gov\/stat\/goals\/373k-8pcx\/evi9-9ujz\/ag9g-hkap\">2-year and 4-year degrees<\/a> (thank you <a href=\"https:\/\/open.piercecountywa.gov\/\">Open Pierce County<\/a> for that statistic!), you can see why innovative programs to prepare our students for in-demand, family-wage jobs is critically important.<\/p>\n<p>I wish the Puyallup nursing students all the best as they work toward their degrees and celebrate their pinning ceremony!<\/p>\n<p>And, I wish you a great three-day weekend. While you\u2019re away from the office, I hope you will keep in mind the reason for our holiday on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. King taught us many important lessons while he was alive \u2013 and continues to provide inspiration to us today. I have personally taken his following quote to heart:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cLife\u2019s most persistent and urgent question is, \u2018What are you doing for others?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, what are we doing for others?\u00a0 Not just on Monday, but every day of the year.
