You may have noticed a big, white cube on the outskirts of Fircrest. \u00a0Thanks to the Economic Development Board (EDB), Chair Richardson, Councilmember Morell and I had the chance to peek inside the building.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1902\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3255-e1566584956933.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3255-e1566584956933.jpg 3024w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3255-e1566584956933-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3255-e1566584956933-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The building, owned and managed by NewCold, is a cold storage facility that houses seafood and produce.\u00a0 Their primary customer is Trident Seafoods, one of the largest companies that fish in Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>NewCold is based in The Netherlands and the Tacoma location is its first in the United States. They also have a Burley, Idaho facility that focuses on potatoes \u2013 naturally!<\/p>\n<p>I was thrilled to hear company officials talk about how their search for a site south of Seattle led them to Pierce County.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1904\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3238a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3238a.jpg 2162w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3238a-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3238a-768x1062.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2019\/08\/IMG_3238a-740x1024.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the buildings in the 5-story complex houses more than 100,000 pallets for their customers! It was amazing to watch robots moving between aisles to retrieve and pack seafood for delivery. The entire facility features the latest kind of technology created to manage and distribute products. The staff have warm coats as they both process orders and maintain the technology in near zero temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>NewCold is a great example of the kind of smart, innovative employer that we\u2019re excited to welcome to Pierce County!<\/p>\n<p>Before I close, I\u2019d like to thank the eight interns we had working across Pierce County this summer.\u00a0 Today is their last day with us and I appreciate the many contributions they made to our success.
