{"id":1922,"date":"2019-09-06T09:22:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T16:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1922"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:34:55","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:34:55","slug":"let-the-light-shine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2019\/09\/06\/let-the-light-shine\/","title":{"rendered":"Let the light shine!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a huge believer in the power of transparency.\u00a0 Being able to see something clearly, gives understanding and builds confidence.\u00a0 Those two principles are core to why transparency to our residents and taxpayers is so critical to the work we do.\u00a0 Accountability and trust go along with it &#8211; especially in a government setting.\u00a0 An increasingly important part of our work is to be transparent with the public.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy to shed light on the operations and actions of a government entity &#8211; especially one as large and complex as Pierce County. It requires a significant amount of time. Plus, sometimes it\u2019s downright uncomfortable.\u00a0 But we need to stay vigilant in our obligation to being transparent and accountable to those we serve and who fund our work.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I strongly advocate for the initiatives we\u2019ve launched to bring more visibility to how we\u2019re serving the people of Pierce County.\u00a0 I am proud of our work.\u00a0 Giving our residents greater visibility into our work is good for them and good for us at the County.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years a dedicated team of department representatives, led by Finance, IT and Communications, created a series of dashboards and other data through the suite of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.piercecountywa.gov\">Open Pierce County<\/a> webpages.<\/p>\n<p>It began with <a href=\"https:\/\/open.piercecountywa.gov\/#openPerformance\">Open Performance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/open.piercecountywa.gov\/browse\">Open Data<\/a>, two sites that work in tandem to measure and report on the County\u2019s progress on specific and trackable goals.\u00a0 Those measures are continuously updated, and I meet with every department director on a quarterly basis to review their group\u2019s results.\u00a0 In other words, we take this very seriously.<\/p>\n<p>The next phase we launched was <a href=\"https:\/\/piercecounty.budget.socrata.com\/#!\/year\/default\">Open Budget<\/a>, a transparent look at where our revenue comes from and how we spend it on behalf of the taxpayers.\u00a0 By making this information easily accessible, we are demonstrating our commitment to being good stewards of the funds.<\/p>\n<p>Although not part of the Open Pierce County suite of sites, our focus on transparency also led to the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co.pierce.wa.us\/5446\/Online-Public-Records-Request-Portal\">Public Records Portal<\/a>, making it easier and more convenient for people to submit and track public records requests.<\/p>\n<p>And, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co.pierce.wa.us\/1571\/Code-Enforcement\">Code Enforcement webpage<\/a> gives residents a simpler way to report nuisance properties in their neighborhood.\u00a0 That site includes a map that shows where issues have been identified and which properties have been resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Our work to throw open the curtains and let the light shine in has not gone unnoticed.\u00a0 A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article234672702.html\"><em>Tacoma News Tribune<\/em> editorial<\/a> gave Open Pierce County a favorable shout-out and applauded the Council for increasing better visibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/internal.open.piercecountywa.gov\/stories\/s\/bmvc-vhde\">claims filed<\/a> against the County.<\/p>\n<p>The next step in our initiative to create more access to Pierce County\u2019s work is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piercecountywa.gov\/openproject\">Open Project<\/a> site.\u00a0 At that interactive dashboard, people can learn about the location, budget, spending and schedule information for the County\u2019s capital projects. This is where you can find out about that capital project down the road, or look at all of our sewer projects across the County.
