{"id":1958,"date":"2019-09-27T11:39:37","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T18:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1958"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:34:54","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:34:54","slug":"show-me-the-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2019\/09\/27\/show-me-the-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Show me the money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had the honor and privilege of presenting our first-ever biennial budget to the Council this week.<\/p>\n<p>As you will hear me say in the brief video clip below, I believe budgets reflect our values.\u00a0 And, this proposed budget is no exception.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_20544\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QLB8ZhCgAvA?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=QLB8ZhCgAvA&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In our work to create and nurture a place where people choose to live, work and raise a family, we have consistently focused on three main goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating vibrant communities<\/li>\n<li>Fostering an entrepreneurial climate<\/li>\n<li>Operating an effective government<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s why you will see we are proposing investments in important initiatives to bring a regional approach to creating more affordable housing, an outreach campaign to rescue victims of human trafficking, and plans to leverage grant funds to expand the successful MCIRT program to Lakewood.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, people expect us to keep them safe and secure in their homes.\u00a0 As a result, we\u2019ve invested nearly a million dollars to accelerate our work to clean up encampments and we hope to add mental health co-responders to our Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019re bringing greater focus and alignment of our environmental goals by creating a new manager position that would oversee the update of the County\u2019s 2020 sustainability goals, and the implementation of the plan going forward. This position is in addition to our proposal to direct nearly $2 million to improve water quality, improve salmon passage and mitigate flood control issues.<\/p>\n<p>In my remarks to the Council, I pointed out the opportunities that have been created as a result of the prudent financial management and discipline carried out by many of you. We are focused on getting things done for the people of Pierce County, and the foundation of this work \u2013 sound financial management and smart business practices \u2013 makes this possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in reading the entire budget, you can access it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co.pierce.wa.us\/Archive.aspx?AMID=38&amp;Type=Recent\">here<\/a>. And, if you are caught up on your \u201cmust see TV,\u201d you can fill up your popcorn bowl and watch the entire Council meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/online.co.pierce.wa.us\/cfapps\/council\/iview\/councilMeeting.cfm?meeting_dt=9\/24\/2019%203:00%20PM\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My thanks to the many people who put in hundreds of hours in developing our budget proposal.\u00a0 Special thanks to Gary Robinson, Jim Dickman and Julie Demuth from the Finance Department, as well as Chris Cooley from the Executive team.\u00a0 I assured them at the start of the process that a biennial budget would be twice the fun \u2013 but, now they can take next year off!<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>I hope you had the opportunity to see or read about the Legal Financial Obligation Reconsideration Day event.<\/p>\n<p>If you were in the CCB on Wednesday, you no doubt saw the crowds of people waiting to have their existing financial obligations heard by our judges.
