{"id":1980,"date":"2019-10-11T14:38:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T21:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:34:23","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:34:23","slug":"this-ability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2019\/10\/11\/this-ability\/","title":{"rendered":"This ability!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.\u00a0 You may not have heard of that recognition before, but it has been celebrated for 70 years!<\/p>\n<p>Dictionary.com defines the word &#8220;ability&#8221; as: \u201ccompetence in an activity or occupation because of one&#8217;s skill, training, or other qualification.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll notice there was no mention made of one\u2019s physical mobility or sensory capability.<\/p>\n<p>As you are likely aware, we have made Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) a priority at Pierce County.\u00a0 This week\u2019s blog focuses on the inclusive part of that initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Being an inclusive employer means\u00a0people get to belong and contribute \u2013 regardless of physical capability or perceived limitation. Having a more inclusive work environment gives us the opportunity to benefit from the contributions of all of us. Having said that, sometimes that requires us to make a reasonable accommodation or adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to introduce you to an example here at the County.\u00a0 Hongda Sao works in Human Services as part of the Aging and Disabilities Resources team. As he readily admits, his colleagues didn\u2019t quite know how to interact with him at first, given his limited sight.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll let him tell you in this video:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_48466\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KV75GD8W70o?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=KV75GD8W70o&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>My thanks to Hongda for teaching all of us that being inclusive might mean making some shifts in how we work or the equipment we need, but those small actions mean a world of difference to people who make valuable contributions to the work we do to serve Pierce County.<\/p>\n<p>This topic is very personal to me.<\/p>\n<p>My brother-in-law lost his hearing due to a bout of meningitis as a baby.\u00a0 Our relationship goes back to when we were very young &#8211; turning over rocks on a local beach looking for crabs.\u00a0 I have watched him grow into an amazing man, father, and gifted educator.\u00a0 \u201cTalking\u201d with Andy takes a little more work &#8211; for both of us.\u00a0 It generally involves equal parts of sign-language, charades, lip-reading, and occasionally a note pad. We have shared about parenting, hobbies, retirement, exercise, faith, relationships, and investments \u2013 all of life\u2019s issues.\u00a0 He has helped me grow in my understanding and appreciation of those in our community with disabilities \u2013 or different abilities.\u00a0 Despite his deafness \u2013 and possibly because of it \u2013 Andy is far more perceptive of people and much funnier than I ever have been.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, I served for 12 years on the Board of the Tacoma Goodwill \u2013 and my mother served on the Board before me.\u00a0 I saw the power of work in people with a wide range of disabilities.\u00a0 When our community is open to the contributions of others, who have different physical, sensory, or developmental abilities, it helps provide them with dignity and helps strengthen our humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, I\u2019ve seen many examples of people who overcame incredible challenges to find ways to significantly contribute.\u00a0 One memory stands out powerfully.\u00a0 At a national conference, I met a young woman who was born without arms or legs.\u00a0 Yet, she went on to learn to type, and took public transit to work every day \u2013 in Minneapolis \u2013 think snow and ice!\u00a0 When I met her, she was studying for her bachelor\u2019s degree in social work.\u00a0 But she also had recently been to the White House and had the chance to meet the president.\u00a0 While most of us would have been awestruck in the meeting, she had the presence of mind to share how working and earning a wage was jeopardizing some of the critical services she was receiving.\u00a0 Her story and example left me humbled and challenged, and encouraged me to make the best possible use of the abilities I had been given.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of national impact, this morning I had the chance to thank Quentin Brown, in Fleet Services, for his work that makes our entire country safer \u2013 yes, not just the county, but the country!<\/p>\n<p>One of our deputies brought her Tahoe patrol vehicle in to Quentin with a complaint about a significant brake problem.\u00a0 Quentin was able to determine there was a critical failure of a part in the power braking system.\u00a0 Picture yourself in a big heavy Tahoe, on the winding rural roads of Pierce County, with deep drainage ditches on each side, traveling with lights and sirens to an emergency call \u2013 and suddenly, your brakes aren\u2019t working!\u00a0 I am so thankful that Quentin and the Fleet team were able to repair the brake systems on our Sheriff\u2019s fleet of Tahoes before anyone was hurt.\u00a0 But it doesn\u2019t stop there, based on the work Quentin did, a safety recall was issued for 4 million affected vehicles <strong>throughout the country<\/strong>!\u00a0 Just another example of Pierce County leading the way!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1981\"
