{"id":2089,"date":"2019-11-22T14:50:15","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T22:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=2089"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:34:21","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:34:21","slug":"the-power-to-choose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2019\/11\/22\/the-power-to-choose\/","title":{"rendered":"The power to choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having the ability to make choices is\u00a0a foundation of\u00a0freedom and dignity.\u00a0 It is a powerful principle that drives us \u2013 and as I look at Pierce County, it both motivates and challenges me.<\/p>\n<p>You can even see the word \u201cchoose\u201d in our mission statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vibrant Pierce County where people <u>choose<\/u> to live, work and raise a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing that people have choices &#8211; investors, employers, employees, residents \u2013 means we need to always challenge ourselves to be the best for our community.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke at the South Sound Summit hosted by the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber last week and talked about the power of \u201cchoices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hope everyone is aware that I am working hard to recruit new investment in Pierce County to bring family wage jobs.\u00a0 Simply put, if we want our residents to have the choice to work as well as live in Pierce County, we need more family-wage jobs available to them.<\/p>\n<p>Investors have choices, too, which is why we must make the case on behalf of our community and workforce.\u00a0 We want them to choose our community to build their next manufacturing site or technology hub.\u00a0 While our Economic Development team is spearheading our efforts, everyone in County government plays a role in this from permitting to HR, and from Roads to public safety.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m so pleased we are seeing more of this investment that I am adjusting my goal slightly from creating \u201cfamily-wage jobs\u201d to \u201cfamily-wage careers.\u201d While only one word is different, it sends a powerful message!\u00a0 It implies a long-term relationship between employer and employee \u2013 with growth options.<\/p>\n<p>At the County, we also need to be an \u201cemployer of choice\u201d with professional growth and development opportunities.\u00a0 Investing in our employees builds trust, loyalty and great service to our residents. \u00a0A case in point, Sheree Clark, who has been a member of our Economic Development team for 20 years is choosing to retire next month.\u00a0 Congratulations and thank you for your service, Sheree!<\/p>\n<p>(Reminder: we are in Open Enrollment for our healthcare benefits.\u00a0 Be sure to submit your application to choose the best options for you and your family.\u00a0 They are due by next week!)<\/p>\n<p>However, we must realize that not everyone in our community is fortunate enough to have the choices that most of us enjoy.\u00a0 They don\u2019t have a choice of jobs, healthcare plans, or places to live.\u00a0 As we move Pierce County forward, we must foster a community where everyone has options and the dignity that comes with them.\u00a0 We need more access to education and workforce development, more affordable housing options, and for some, more treatment and services.<\/p>\n<p>Last night I toured the construction site for the new Substance Treatment And Recovery Training (START) at Good Samaritan Hospital.\u00a0 This new 20-bed in-patient program is focused on pregnant women trapped in addiction.\u00a0 The primary goal of this new unit, only the third of its kind in Washington, is a healthy start for babies, but the program also gives these new moms the choice to change their lives.\u00a0 Dr. Abi Plawman and the START team are amazing healers.<\/p>\n<p>As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to highlight that the Council and I issued a resolution proclaiming November to be \u201cNative American and Alaskan Native Heritage Month.\u201d\u00a0 Twice this week I\u2019ve had the privilege of speaking at events along with Puyallup Tribal Chairman David Bean.
