These classes have expanded my knowledge, broadened my understanding, and better prepared me for my future.<\/p>\n<p>I recently read an article about our own Jeremy Carnahan, wastewater operations supervisor, in \u201cTreatment Plant Operator\u201d Magazine. I have included a link and encourage you to read it, too <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpomag.com\/editorial\/2020\/08\/jeremy-carnahan-took-to-wastewater-work-with-a-natural-fascination-for-its-mechanics-and-importance\">https:\/\/www.tpomag.com\/editorial\/2020\/08\/jeremy-carnahan-took-to-wastewater-work-with-a-natural-fascination-for-its-mechanics-and-importance<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>What stood out to me is Jeremy\u2019s hunger to learn more and become better.\u00a0 Starting from his service in the Army and critical work done in Iraq, he has been \u2013 and continues to be \u2013 on a relentless journey to learn more about his profession and become a better leader.\u00a0 I love that one of his pet peeves is \u201cThat\u2019s the way it has always been done.\u201d\u00a0 He is constantly challenging the status quo \u2013 he is an innovator, but not reckless.\u00a0 He fully understands and appreciates the critical responsibility he and his team have to our community in operating our wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).<\/p>\n<p>I also love that one of Jeremy\u2019s favorite quotes is from Richard Branson &#8211; \u201cTrain people well enough to leave but treat them well enough that they want to stay.\u201d\u00a0 I could not agree more!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Jeremy likes to \u201cdo the math,\u201d which is particularly important in running our WWTP.\u00a0 I smiled when I read that \u2013 I am a \u201cmath guy\u201d too.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped by the treatment plant to congratulate Jeremy on his recognition this week!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2553\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2553 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2020\/09\/Bruce-and-Jeremy2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2020\/09\/Bruce-and-Jeremy2.jpg 4032w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2020\/09\/Bruce-and-Jeremy2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2020\/09\/Bruce-and-Jeremy2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2020\/09\/Bruce-and-Jeremy2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4032px) 100vw, 4032px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeremy Carnahan and I are both math guys!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking of education, school started this week for many students in our community \u2013 and it was far from normal.\u00a0 While the importance of our children\u2019s K-12 education hasn\u2019t changed, COVID-19 has changed just about everything else for them.\u00a0 I am very thankful that our \u201cJuly Peak\u201d in new cases is firmly behind us and our cases have been falling since early August.\u00a0 Our new 14-day average case rate on September 1<sup>st<\/sup> (46), was roughly half of what it was on August 1<sup>st<\/sup> (91).\u00a0 Our COVID-19 test \u201cpositivity\u201d is declining as well.<\/p>\n<p>I am very thankful for all the school leaders, teachers, and support staff that have been working tirelessly to prepare for this Fall.\u00a0 While schools have been starting with remote learning, I am confident many schools will soon be able to resume in-person classes.\u00a0 In-person is particularly important for our youngest learners, those with disabilities, and students with disadvantages.\u00a0 But even these in-person classes will be very different from last Fall.\u00a0 The school must follow specific safety precautions \u2013 like we have in our workplaces.\u00a0 Masks, social distancing, hand washing and rigorous cleaning are now part of the school day.\u00a0 The majority of our schools, even when they can resume in-person instruction, will be in a \u201chybrid\u201d configuration to meet the classroom separation guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t fathom all the obstacles and changing circumstances our school professionals are facing.\u00a0 I have been on the phone with school leaders from Carbonado to Charles Wright and from Puyallup to Peninsula.\u00a0 It is going to be a very challenging Fall for school administrators, teachers, students, and parents \u2013 including many of our co-workers with students at home.\u00a0 I would say \u201chug a teacher,\u201d but it might be better to just say \u201cthank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked one of our exceptional colleagues how the start of school was going for her kindergartner with remote learning. \u00a0She sighed and shared it was difficult to get him to \u201clog on\u201d on day two.\u00a0 I will be thankful when her school can resume in-person, safely, so her son can fall in love with learning like I have.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading and enjoy the long weekend!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-78 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature.png\" alt=\"Bruce\" width=\"111\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature.png 680w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bruce<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t think I could believe more strongly in education.\u00a0 My life has been shaped by my education, from Mr. Dempsey\u2019s 7th Grade class at Curtis Junior High to the Leadership Class at the U.S. Naval Academy, and from Construction Law classes at the University of Washington to Tribal Relations training at Pierce County.
