(By the way, I got my second dose last Saturday at White River High School.\u00a0 Nurse Shelley Kelly ended up giving me both of my shots \u2013 4 weeks apart!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2955\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2021\/05\/Bruce-Second-Shot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2021\/05\/Bruce-Second-Shot.jpg 4032w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2021\/05\/Bruce-Second-Shot-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2021\/05\/Bruce-Second-Shot-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2021\/05\/Bruce-Second-Shot-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4032px) 100vw, 4032px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are now focusing on reaching everyone in the County with encouragement, accurate information responding to their questions and concerns, and convenient access to a jab. That includes folks in marginalized or disadvantaged communities &#8211; people of color, those who speak a language other than English, those with vision or hearing impairments, those who don\u2019t trust government, and others.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m proud of and thankful for our Department of Emergency Management (DEM) Team.\u00a0 Ivan Tudela is indicative of their overall attitude and commitment.\u00a0 I have seen Ivan at many vaccinations sites over the last months.\u00a0 We all know you can tell when someone is smiling, even if they are wearing a mask.\u00a0 That goes double for Ivan!\u00a0 His smile is so big, I think it actually sticks out of both sides of his mask! He and his team do an amazing job ensuring everyone is welcome and included in our effort to get people vaccinated. Ivan was raised by bi-lingual parents himself and understands the hardships of not feeling as if they \u201cbelong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can hear Ivan in his own words, here:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_89607\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iJ1exwlW_Cw?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=iJ1exwlW_Cw&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>When I listen to Ivan, I realize the work we are doing to get everyone in our community vaccinated, regardless of background, language or disability, is both providing protection from COVID-19 AND building community!<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about Ivan in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piercecountywa.gov\/7178\/Diversity-Equity-and-Inclusion\">DEI report<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019m especially glad to highlight Ivan\u2019s work during Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.<\/p>\n<p>The work being done by Ivan and his team is critically important as we work to get jabs in arms as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>That sense of urgency is driving a gathering I host every Monday morning.\u00a0 Called the Vaccination Task Force, about 40 of our area\u2019s business, community and education leaders come together to brainstorm, exchange ideas and discuss barriers to folks getting the vaccine.\u00a0 We keep these calls short and action-oriented so that we use people\u2019s time efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>The task force members are very busy, so we asked for a six-week commitment to 30-minute calls once a week.\u00a0 And, I\u2019m pleased to see what we\u2019ve been able to do after just two meetings. One idea that came out of the Vaccination Task Force is the new Rainiers game promotion. You may have heard that the Rainiers created a \u201cvaccinated\u201d section of the park and will be offering vaccines at select games. \u00a0The Puyallup-Sumner Chamber of Commerce hosted a Cinco de Mayo vaccination event with Johnson &amp; Johnson.\u00a0 Absher Construction had a vaccination team come out to a job site! These leaders are coming together to help their communities get protected.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what all of this is about.\u00a0 Jabs in arms. As quickly as possible. We know that getting as many people vaccinated as possible is our ticket out of the pandemic world.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s become clear to the experts that herd immunity &#8211; around 80% threshold of people vaccinated &#8211; is likely not possible so we\u2019re going to have to learn to live in a more \u201cnormalized\u201d COVID world.\u00a0 In other words, we must ensure the most vulnerable in our community are protected and the rest of us will have to live with some level of COVID for the foreseeable future.\u00a0 We simply can\u2019t continue in our current \u201cemergency mode\u201d much longer.\u00a0 At this point, I expect the transition to \u201cpost-pandemic\u201d life will occur by Independence Day in July \u2013 seems appropriate!<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t urge you strongly enough to get vaccinated.\u00a0 And if you, a family member, friend or neighbor is hesitant, I encourage you to seek out good, factual information and make the decision that is right for you and your personal circumstances. The Health Department has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpchd.org\/healthy-people\/diseases\/human-coronavirus\/covid-19-frequently-asked-questions\">great FAQ<\/a> section to check out.\u00a0 We also want to make sure you know where the upcoming vaccination events are so you can be a resource for your community!\u00a0 Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/findyourcovidshot.com\">FindYourCovidShot.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I shared a similar message with members of the UFCW union of grocery workers when I met with them this week.\u00a0 As you may have heard or read, the Council narrowly passed an ordinance to provide some grocery workers in unincorporated Pierce County a $4 an hour hazard pay increase.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been very clear that I believe the legislation, while well intentioned, inequitably singled out one group of essential employees for special treatment \u2013 and actually only a subgroup within their group.\u00a0 Furthermore, I was very concerned about the prospect of the County intruding into a private sector collective bargaining relationship. I ultimately vetoed the ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 I am extremely grateful for the sacrifices and risks grocery workers have endured to make sure our stores\u2019 shelves are stocked, and people can have healthy food choices.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also appreciated the many other heroes on the front lines during the pandemic &#8211; our first responders, healthcare workers, teachers, and many more.\u00a0 In fact, this week happens to be Nurse Appreciation Week and Teachers Appreciation Week!<\/p>\n<p>I was moved to hear the powerful testimony of many speakers at Tuesday\u2019s Council meeting and I was upset to hear how some shoppers have mistreated grocery workers over the last year.\u00a0 Having said that, the surest protection from COVID is through vaccination \u2013 both for them and their shoppers.\u00a0 And, thanks to the work of DEM, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and store pharmacies, free vaccines are readily and easily available to all grocery store employees \u2013 and everyone in our County.<\/p>\n<p>I will close with a request:\u00a0 please check on your friends, family members, and neighbors to see how they\u2019re doing and whether they have questions or concerns about getting the vaccine.
