{"id":3952,"date":"2023-04-14T11:24:14","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T18:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=3952"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:26:35","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:26:35","slug":"a-gold-medal-volunteer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2023\/04\/14\/a-gold-medal-volunteer\/","title":{"rendered":"A gold medal volunteer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3953\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/gold-medal.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5364\" height=\"3576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/gold-medal.jpeg 5364w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/gold-medal-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/gold-medal-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/gold-medal-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 5364px) 100vw, 5364px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every year we honor the amazing people who freely give of their time and talent to benefit our residents.\u00a0 In fact, this Saturday we are honoring nearly 50 people who give back to our youth, teach us gardening, care for our environment, are prepared for emergencies, and much more.\u00a0 The annual Volunteer Recognition Brunch is one of my favorite events because it reminds me of what really makes our community so special &#8211; the people.<\/p>\n<p>One of the people we are honoring may be familiar to those of you who have lived in the region for quite a while.\u00a0 I was in awe of the incredible achievements of the young boxers from the Tacoma Boys Club.<\/p>\n<p>Leo Randolph grew up in Tacoma and attended Wilson (now Silas) High School in the 70\u2019s.\u00a0 As a 14-year-old, he was challenged to set goals for his life &#8211; which resulted in him reaching the pinnacle of amateur athletics.\u00a0 He won the gold medal in the boxing flyweight division of the 1976 Olympic Games. Wow!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3957\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3957 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/Leo-Randolph.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/Leo-Randolph.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/04\/Leo-Randolph-237x300.jpeg 237w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gold medal boxer Leo Randolph<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But I could argue his greatest impact on our community came outside the ring.\u00a0 For nearly 40 years, Leo has volunteered at Remann Hall, serving some of our most troubled youth. When asked by a young man if he would cut his hair, despite having no formal training, he said \u201cyes.\u201d\u00a0 Think about how powerful the thousands of Leo\u2019s haircuts have been.\u00a0 Remember how important your appearance was to you as a teenager?\u00a0 Now imagine you were in youth detention and the person volunteering to cut your hair was a gold medal boxer.\u00a0 A lot of mentoring can happen when the clippers are buzzing.
