As our population grew, the need for our county services grew too.\u00a0 Courts expanded in the CCB, and other departments were moved out to other leased locations.\u00a0 The City of Tacoma moved out to their current municipal building (originally built in 1931) in 1977, leaving their court and related services behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3999\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3999\" style=\"width: 779px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3999 \" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/courthouseoldnew2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"779\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/courthouseoldnew2.jpg 1192w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/courthouseoldnew2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/courthouseoldnew2-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/courthouseoldnew2-1024x613.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The newly built County-City Building\u00a0&#8211; note the old courthouse is still standing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fast forward to today.<\/p>\n<p>By moving the last remaining non-judicial groups out of the CCB we can make badly needed space for courtrooms and those departments and operations that support them &#8211; Clerk\u2019s Office, Prosecutors, Jury Administration, and others.\u00a0 Having an integrated justice center serves our community more effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>The County-City Building will finally be fully transformed into the County Justice Center.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, getting other departments out of the leased space they\u2019re currently occupying and into one building saves money and allows them to operate more efficiently, too.\u00a0 Plus, we are taking advantage of a very favorable real estate market for office buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The purchased building at 1501 Market Street, will house the Council, the Executive team, and Communications from the CCB, as well as Economic Development, Finance, Human Resources, IT, Facilities, and Risk Management from throughout Tacoma.\u00a0 As planning progresses, we may make further moves involving the Sheriff\u2019s Department and Human Services.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3993\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3993 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/1501-Market.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/1501-Market.jpeg 1500w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/1501-Market-300x177.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/1501-Market-768x454.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/05\/1501-Market-1024x605.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1501 Market Street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks to our Facilities team for getting us to this point, but there\u2019s a lot of work ahead.\u00a0 Final Council approval is targeted for the end of the month, followed by a lot of due diligence, and hopefully closing the sale in October. The first groups are expected to move to 1501 Market in late 2024 or early 2025.
