{"id":4261,"date":"2023-11-17T10:08:08","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T18:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=4261"},"modified":"2023-11-17T10:08:10","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T18:08:10","slug":"more-than-a-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2023\/11\/17\/more-than-a-month\/","title":{"rendered":"More than a month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art-1024x287.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art-1024x287.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art-768x215.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art-1536x430.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2023\/11\/Native-Art.jpg 1888w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The month of November has been designated as Native American Heritage Month but our partnership, respect and appreciation for local tribal leaders and members is present year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work of serving our residents frequently intersects with the priorities and interests of the four primary sovereign nations with whom we share the 1,670 square miles within our boundaries.\u00a0 The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the Nisqually Indian Tribe, and the Squaxin Island Tribe are key partners in preserving and enhancing our natural environment, creating jobs, keeping communities safe, and serving our most vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those broad connections are why we prioritize our Government-to-Government training classes for County employees, led by Pam and Gordon James.\u00a0 I like to personally kick off these classes (Although sadly, I was sick for our most recent class).\u00a0 During my introduction, I highlight that better understanding tribal history and governance is critical for three reasons.\u00a0 First, it is important for all of us to understand the heritage of this region we call home.
