{"id":4340,"date":"2024-02-02T10:13:42","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T18:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=4340"},"modified":"2024-02-02T12:18:49","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T20:18:49","slug":"put-your-heart-into-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2024\/02\/02\/put-your-heart-into-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Put your heart into it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2024\/02\/heart-1024x380.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4341\" width=\"614\" height=\"224\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve always said that we work with amazing people, and I recently learned about another extraordinary County employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the day, Kyra (O&#8217;Keefe) Smithlin is an Accounting Assistant II with the Finance Department.&nbsp; But the rest of her time is devoted to the American Heart Association.&nbsp; Once you hear her story you\u2019ll understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Second Chance\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/906482669?h=b388f73aec&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today is Go Red for Women Day and as the new national ambassador Kyra appeared on the TODAY Show live in the NYC studio earlier today.&nbsp; Kyra was selected from thousands of applicants, and she almost didn\u2019t even submit her name for consideration!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see a clip of her time on the TODAY Show with Al Roker and team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/cardiac-arrest-survivor-talks-importance-of-learning-cpr-203486277852\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyra has been busy over the last decade speaking with local groups at places like Benaroya Hall, the Washington State Fair, the Glass Museum, and the LeMay Museum.&nbsp; But, what an exciting time in Kyra\u2019s life as she embarks on sharing her story with the whole country!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the county today people are wearing red to raise awareness of the importance of heart health.&nbsp; Learning CPR (and the signs of stroke) may save a life. It certainly saved Kyra\u2019s \u2013 many times!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to share with you another wonderful County employee. Trixy Petaia is a Bilingual Case Manager with the Human Services Aging and Disabilities Resources group. For the last 9 years she has been a kind, trusted advocate for Suilia, a 94-year-old client.&nbsp; Their bond was very strong, as you can imagine. &nbsp;You can learn more about them and their friendship in this clip from a video created late last year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trixy and Siuila - Pierce County Aging &amp; Disability Resources\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/908867924?h=bf2128d2cb&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was sad to hear that Suilia passed away a couple of weeks ago, leaving behind a grieving family and a heartbroken friend.&nbsp; As Trixy said, \u201cThis is the toughest part of what we do.&nbsp; Siuila has left behind a legacy of love and light with her family, friends, and me.&nbsp; At one point during the interview for our video, I asked her what her secret was.&nbsp; She said \u201cpray everyday and take care of your teeth.\u201d At the age of 94, she had all her teeth, didn\u2019t wear any dentures \ud83d\ude0a\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trixy, thank you for the care, support and advocacy you provided for dear Suilia.
