We are perched on an active fault that could rumble at any time.\u00a0 It\u2019s not very comforting but the seismologists who study these things tell us that we are well overdue for the \u201cbig one\u201d that could devastate our region.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week we sent out a video of some guy asking you to get prepared for dealing with a disaster.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t kidding about the need to get ready.<\/p>\n<p>Do I have your attention, now?<\/p>\n<p>As public servants we have an obligation to take care of the more than 800,000 people who reside in Pierce County \u2013 and that is especially critical in a disaster.\u00a0 But, if we aren\u2019t prepared at home we won\u2019t be able to take care of our duty.<\/p>\n<p>You need to be ready to take care of yourselves and your family for two weeks. That includes food, water, prescriptions, clothing and anything a pet may need. However, in the event of a serious disaster, your plan for your family means they need to be able to take care of themselves without you \u2013 while we are taking care of the rest of our citizens.\u00a0 For me, this meant re-evaluating my previous plans and thinking about what has changed.\u00a0 Today, in the event of a serious disaster, my personal plan has Lauren and Bosco linking up with our daughter-in-law, Molly, and granddaughter, Blair, at their house in University Place (I assume that my son, Brent, will be at Mary Bridge, where he works as a pharmacist, helping the injured.)\u00a0 Our plan includes having some supplies that Lauren can take with her in our pickup truck.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another chance to watch the video and get helpful tips for getting ready:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_59061\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gm3c6EQtVYU?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=Gm3c6EQtVYU&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>Have a kit \u2013 have a plan \u2013 be ready to help others!<\/p>\n<p>When I think about how quickly we would need to spring into action and help county residents I rest a bit easier knowing that Lowell Porter and his team at Emergency Management are at the helm.\u00a0 That\u2019s due to folks like Chelsey Bell. Chelsey is one of the \u201cduty officers\u201d on call to handle emergencies 24\/7. She is smart, detailed and quick to respond.
