{"id":695,"date":"2017-09-15T15:07:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T22:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=695"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:36:10","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:36:10","slug":"vox-populi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2017\/09\/15\/vox-populi\/","title":{"rendered":"Vox populi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s blog is titled \u201cVox populi.\u201d\u00a0 For those of you who don\u2019t know Latin, it means \u201cthe voice of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our community and our government depend on the active involvement of \u201cthe people\u201d for support and vitality.\u00a0 They are volunteers, committee members, coaches, mentors and voters.<\/p>\n<p>Two gatherings this week were great examples of the importance of actively engaging with the people we serve.<\/p>\n<p>The first meeting was held last Sunday night at the Greenwater Fire Department. About 150 local residents gathered to hear the latest information about the Sawmill Creek and Norse Peak fires that threatened their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The Incident Command team did a great job explaining the steps the firefighters had taken to protect the region and what they could expect in the hours and days ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-696\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/09\/Bruce-at-Greenwater.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/09\/Bruce-at-Greenwater.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/09\/Bruce-at-Greenwater-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/09\/Bruce-at-Greenwater-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/09\/Bruce-at-Greenwater-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3264px) 100vw, 3264px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Meeting with residents in Greenwater<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m glad I had the chance to be part of that community meeting. I watched them come together to support each other, ask questions of and express appreciation for the local firefighters, as well as those from California.<\/p>\n<p>Another important meeting took place this week.\u00a0 On Tuesday afternoon, the County Council met to discuss and vote on the Master Site Plan for Chambers Creek Regional Park.\u00a0 The site plan is updated every ten years and the 2007 version featured many suggested changes.<\/p>\n<p>The most controversial change proposed to the Council was to include long-term rentals at the planned-for golf resort.\u00a0 Although the \u201cgolf villas\u201d had been included in the original development proposal chosen for Chambers Bay, the concept had recently generated strong opinions and fears about the potential impact on the park.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s fair to say that the vast majority of those who packed the Council chambers on Tuesday were opposed to what they understood to be \u201cpermanent housing\u201d at Chambers Bay.\u00a0 They spoke with passion and concern about what they perceived to be intrusive and damaging development on the park they love.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m grateful for members of the community who take time out of their busy lives to come to Council meetings and voice their opinions.<\/p>\n<p>The Council ultimately voted to allow extended stay villas to be included in the site plan and the work is now beginning to negotiate with the resort developers to ensure that the park, golf course and the natural environment are preserved, protected and enhanced.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean that all of those who spoke before the Council wasted their time?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 As we go through this next phase of the project you can be assured we will continue to keep \u201cthe people\u201d informed, involved and connected with the county.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-78 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature.png\" alt=\"Bruce\" width=\"124\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature.png 680w, https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/files\/2017\/01\/Bruce-blue-signature-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bruce<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
