{"id":854,"date":"2017-11-17T10:03:46","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T18:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/?p=854"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:35:27","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T20:35:27","slug":"validating-the-victorious-and-vanquished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.piercecountywa.gov\/executive\/2017\/11\/17\/validating-the-victorious-and-vanquished\/","title":{"rendered":"Validating the victorious and vanquished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Election Day has come and gone and nearly all the races are decided (Even as I write this, two contests are still too close too call!).\u00a0 As a community, we just finished one of the most important things we do as citizens of the U.S. \u2013 we selected individuals to lead our communities.\u00a0 Disappointingly, only about 28% of Pierce County registered voters did cast ballots.<\/p>\n<p>While the yard signs are coming down and concession speeches have been given, the election isn\u2019t quite finished for Auditor Julie Anderson and her team.\u00a0 That will happen after the election results are certified on November 28.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, I want to offer my congratulations to the crew for successfully administering the November 7 election!<\/p>\n<p>This year was a period of great change for the elections team as they implemented a new tabulation system after a year-long search and selection process.\u00a0 The new system is our first major investment in a tabulation system in over 20 years.\u00a0 Just think about how much technology has changed in that period of time!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_78220\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JVSWfnyYPOc?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=1&playlist=JVSWfnyYPOc&modestbranding=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>Technology makes tabulating votes faster, more consistent and accurate.\u00a0 However, there are many people behind those machines and much of the process is still done by hand, which inherently injects the potential for errors. That\u2019s where Auditor Anderson\u2019s commitment to a secure, open and transparent election process is key to the team\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n<p>I was impressed to see the new system in use during a recent tour of the Elections Center.
