Yielding to Emergency Vehicles Saves Lives

When you see emergency lights and hear sirens, every second matters.

In this video, a deputy responding to a major incident with lights and sirens activated was nearly involved in a serious collision when another driver suddenly darted into a left-turn lane directly in the deputy’s path. Fortunately, a crash was avoided, but the outcome could have been much different.

If an emergency vehicle is approaching:

  • Stay calm
  • Check your mirrors
  • Signal your intentions
  • Move safely to the right when possible
  • Stop and allow the emergency vehicle to pass

Do not make sudden lane changes, turns, or unpredictable movements. Emergency responders are trained to anticipate traffic patterns, but unexpected actions from motorists can create dangerous situations for everyone on the road.

Remember: Emergency vehicles are responding to someone in need. Your safe and predictable actions help first responders reach emergencies quickly and safely.

Help us keep our roads safe. When lights and sirens are activated, yield appropriately and give emergency vehicles the space they need to do their job.
