On April 12, a complaint was received from a homeowner reporting that previous renters had abandoned animals in the residence before returning the property. It was reported that a dog had been left in a bedroom, along with several reptiles in aquariums, some of which appeared to be deceased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A warrant was promptly obtained and approved to enter the home and rescue any surviving animals. Upon entry, the home was found to be in deplorable condition. The dog was located in a back bedroom without access to food or water. It is unknown how long the dog had been left alone. In the same room, officers discovered two deceased bearded dragons and a gecko that appeared to have been dead long enough to become mummified. Two additional bearded dragons were found alive but severely underweight and dehydrated. No food or water was present in the enclosures. The surviving bearded dragons were transferred to a reptile refuge, where they will receive proper care and nutrition until they are healthy enough for adoption. The young dog was transported to the Tacoma Humane Society, where the previous owner will have 14 days to petition. If no owner comes forward, the dog will be made available for adoption. Charges for animal cruelty will be forwarded to a prosecutor for review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was a difficult and distressing call, but thanks to the swift actions of Animal Control Officers and the dedication of those who care for animals, these survivors will have the opportunity to recover and be placed in safe, loving homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
