At 5:03 pm, on Friday July 29th, dispatchers received a phone call of a drowning at Spanaway Lake Park. A 69 year old male went into the water from the boat to fix the propeller. Witness stated that he did not come back up and after a few minutes they called 911. The Pierce County Metro Dive Team and Marine Services Unit responded to the scene. Two divers were sent in for the rescue attempt but with a difficult last seen point and minimal visibility they were unable to locate him in their initial search.
The teams switched from a rescue effort to a recovery effort last night. The male could not be located last night and the teams had to hold off recovery efforts until 07:00 am the next day.
Today, on July 30th, at around 09:45 am we were able to locate the man using our Marine Sonic Sonar and Kongsberg Sonar. Our divers were then able to get to him and recover him from the lake.
