I’m Not Breaking the Law

On September 23rd around 5:00am, deputies were called by Safeway employees stating a vehicle was parked in their side entrance blocking the roadway at approximately the 9800 block of 136th St. E in Puyallup. When deputies arrived, the vehicle was a blocking hazard to other passing vehicles, and a male was sleeping inside. The man refused to provide identification even though the deputy had made it clear he had reasonable suspicion for DUI and he did not feel it would be safe for the community letting the driver go. The deputy had incredible patience for over 15 minutes as he attempted a peaceful resolution. The deputy exhausted all reasoning with the driver, and it was clear the male would not comply.

The 42-year-old male was extracted from the vehicle and arrested for obstruction. The vehicle was towed since it was sitting in the roadway. What was a simple DUI investigation turned into so much more simply by refusing ID. Please know you are required to provide your ID when involved in an investigation, and our deputies can’t let someone go if there is a risk to the public’s safety.
