Thirty years ago, on October 16, 1995, Deputy John Bananola made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while serving the citizens of Pierce County.
On that tragic day, Deputy Bananola and five fellow deputies entered a residence in east Tacoma to serve a search warrant. As they carried out their duties of the search warrant, a suspect opened fire. Deputy Bananola was struck multiple times and lost his life while defending the safety of others.
Deputy Bananola was 36 years old and a proud United States Air Force veteran. He brought the same discipline, integrity, and dedication from his military service to his career in law enforcement.
Beyond the badge, John was a devoted father and was engaged to be married, with a bright future ahead of him. One built on love, family, and service. Deputy John Bananola’s service will never be forgotten, and his sacrifice will forever remind us of the price of protecting our community.
Rest in peace, Deputy John Bananola. Your courage and devotion continue to inspire us thirty years later, and always.
