Thirty-one years ago, Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy John Bananola made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our community.
On October 16, 1995, Deputy Bananola and five fellow deputies were serving a search warrant in east Tacoma when a suspect opened fire, striking John multiple times. At just 36 years old, he lost his life in the line of duty, leaving behind a family, a fiancée, and fellow deputies who would never forget him.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, John served our department for eight years with dedication and integrity. His loss was felt throughout our entire Sheriff’s Office, reminding us of the risks we face every day alongside our partners and the profound impact when one of our own doesn’t come home.
Thirty-one years later, we continue to honor his life, remember his sacrifice, and stand with those who loved him.
Rest in peace, Deputy John Bananola. You are not forgotten.
