On Feb. 8, deputies with our Proactive Property Crimes Unit served a search warrant at a storage unit where they believed a significant amount of stolen property was being stored.
Inside the unit, deputies found approximately $100,000 worth of equipment that had been stolen from five businesses. The equipment was inventoried and returned to the businesses.
Deputies discovered the storage unit during their investigation into January’s fatal hit-and-run collision involving two 12-year-old girls in Midland. Deputies arrested the driver who was responsible for hitting the two girls, and later arrested the man who gave him a ride home after the incident.
Deputies dug deeper into the suspects’ activities and discovered that they were involved in significant property theft. That follow-up investigation led deputies to the storage unit where the property was recovered.
During the arrest of the hit-and-run driver, deputies also recovered $15,000 worth of property belonging to one of same the businesses.
Additional charges for possession of stolen property will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review.
