Yesterday, we shared stats with you from the Puget Sound Auto Theft Task Force’s November report. Today, we want to take a deeper look at trends here in in unincorporated Pierce County.
In the first graphic, you’ll find the 20 most frequently stolen vehicles (by make and model) in unincorporated Pierce County from January through October.
The second graphic is similar to the first, except it lists the vehicles by year and model.
The third graphic is also a Top 20 list, but focuses on vehicles stolen only in October. As you can see, Hyundai and Kia models accounted for 10 of the 20 most frequently stolen vehicles in October (in unincorporated Pierce County).
You’ve probably already heard that car thieves have been exploiting a vulnerability in the ignition systems of some Hyundai/Kia models. In short, some Hyundai/Kia models are relatively easy to steal. Hyundai/Kia is providing free steering wheel locks to police departments across the country for distribution to affected customers. Our agency has not received any of these locks. If you would like to obtain a free steering wheel lock, we suggest calling customer care at 1-800-333-4542.
As you can see, Hyundai/Kia models aren’t the only vehicles being stolen. We encourage all car owners to consider purchasing an anti-theft device. A simple steering wheel lock can be purchased online for $40.
