Overnight, around midnight, a patrol deputy noticed signs of driver impairment from the vehicle in front of him. The deputy initiated a DUI stop and the vehicle pulled over in the 12600 block of Pacific Ave S. in Parkland. As the deputy approached the car, it took off at a high rate of speed.
During the pursuit, the vehicle lost one of its tires on northbound I-5. When the vehicle slowed down, the deputy used a PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to spin around. It then drove down an embankment onto I-5 from the 72nd St offramp.
Lakewood Police were on I-5 and performed another PIT maneuver. Once the vehicle came to a stop, they pulled the driver and passenger from the vehicle. The car ignited, and eventually the whole vehicle was engulfed in flames.
The driver was arrested for DUI and eluding. Deputies took him to the hospital for a blood draw before booking him into jail.
