Stealing mail can have serious consequences, in this case, the mail thief is caught red handed and lands himself in jail with a felony crime.
On May 23rd around 8am, a male suspect is seen stealing mail from a mailbox. What he doesn’t realize, is one of our detectives was in the area at the same time watching what he was doing. The male was observed continuing down the road and opening several other mailboxes to steal the contents. The detective makes contact to recover the mail from the suspect and arrest him. He tells the detective he was collecting the mail for other family members, and he was only going to look at it, then put it down. One of the packages contained important medication for one of the victims.
In total, 17 mailboxes had been opened. Of those 17 mailboxes, 10 victims had mail stolen. The 24-year-old male was booked into the Pierce County Jail for 10 counts of mail theft and 2 confirmed warrants for possession of stolen vehicle and theft in the third degree. The detective then went and returned all 10 pieces of each of the victim’s mail. He even returned the important medication.
The day ended nicely with a wonderful thank you note from the victim to our social media page! Our detectives are working hard each day solving crimes, and even though you may not see them, they are always watching.
