On June 13th around 3:00 pm, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Squad was requested to assist Lakewood PD and West Pierce Fire with an explosive call at the 6100 block of Steilacoom Blvd SW in Lakewood. The 47-year-old male suspect had been making explosive devices when one of his explosive compounds detonated.  The suspect sustained serious life-altering injuries. A detached shed on the property sustained structural damage, and explosive materials were found throughout the debris. The Pierce County Hazardous Device Squad worked to make the scene safe and was then turned over to the Lakewood Police Department for the investigation.

#2 Blocking DUI and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm

On June 15th at 12:43 am, deputies were dispatched to 104th St. E and Waller Rd for a vehicle that was blocking the roadway with a male passed out in the driver’s seat. Deputies could see alcohol containers inside the vehicle and a gun lying at the feet of the driver. The driver was identified as someone who was not allowed to possess or have access to firearms. Deputies strategized a plan to make contact and arrest the male without gaining access to the firearm or fleeing in the vehicle.  Several attempts to wake the driver were unsuccessful. The subject was eventually extracted from the vehicle and woken up. The 35-year-old male was taken into custody for DUI and unlawful possession of a firearm.

#3 Dog Bite

On June 13th at 7:05 pm, deputies were dispatched to assist Fire with an aggressive dog that had wandered into a backyard and bit a child and an adult at the 25300 block of 54th Ave. E in Graham. The dog was preventing the Firefighters from rendering aid by remaining on scene and keeping people from getting close. The Rottweiler was eventually contained in a backyard while waiting for animal control. The dog was later taken to the Humane Society on a three-day hold and deemed dangerous. No owner was located.

#4 Motor Vehicle Fatality

On June 13th around 4:00 am, deputies responded to a single motor vehicle collision in the 7800 block of 198th St. E in Graham. A small pickup truck was towing a fishing boat, and the driver appeared to have suffered from a medical emergency while on his way to go fishing when the vehicle left the roadway at 198th St E and collided with a camper trailer on a nearby property. The 63-year-old male driver was declared deceased. There was a single occupant living in the camper trailer at the time of the collision, and that person sustained minor injuries. There were no signs of braking prior to the collision.
